Julia Walter is an artist jeweler of German and Polynesian heritage, who is currently based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She works in a variety of materials, including 200 year old Japanese oak dyed with curcuma and beeswax, Galalith (a plastic substance derived from casein), and metal to make symbolic works that possess both ancient and contemporary associations. She believes the actual and spiritual worlds to be intimately connected “in a constant flow of movement and transformation, action and reaction,” and views her jewelry as talismanic objects imbued with the energy of “its maker, a moment, a ceremony, and its materiality,” all of which flow between her and the wearer. Walter develops her forms through an incremental process of drawings done by hand on paper, which are transformed by collage and scanning, and then digitally altered by stretching and shape-shifting. Some images are happened upon by chance, while others emanate from her dreams.

Walter studied at ArCo – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual in Lisbon, Portugal and Hochschule Pforzheim in Germany. She has been a guest teacher at both schools, as well as at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, where she is co-founder (with Morgane de Klerk and Benedikt Fischer) of STUDIO 3000, an independent jewelry workspace. She has been included in many international exhibitions, and her work is represented in several important collections.
